9 Best New Movies & Shows to Stream

0

It’s the weekend leading up to St. Patrick’s Day, but for those of you choosing to stay in and cozy up to a good movie or show binge — we’ve got you covered.

We’ve got a diverse slate this weekend, March 15-16, that includes a Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt-led sci-fi movie, a spy-couple-turned-foes theatrical release and a fan-favorite family-friendly sequel finally hitting a streaming platform.

On top of that, we’ve got the usual true crime docket — but with a celebrity twist! — and for those just looking for a good laugh, John Mulaney’s new live talk show is here to entertain.

And there’s more! Here’s a list of the 9 best new movies and shows to watch this weekend and where to stream them.

Black Bag

In this modern-day Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender play two married spies. Their relationship gets put to the test when Cate’s character is accused of being a leak in their agency, leaving her husband wondering how far he’ll go to protect — or catch — his wife (just casual marital problems!).

“The weird thing about these characters is they work so closely with one another, and so they know operationally so much about one another and have a lot of information on one another, but yet they don’t actually know what’s going on with each other,” Blanchett told PEOPLE ahead of the movie’s premiere on March 14.

Novocaine

Didn’t catch Jack Quaid in Companion a month ago? All good, this is his year of labor with a capital L because he’s already back on the big screen as a superhero who just won’t die in Novocaine. When Quaid’s character Nate’s dream girl, Sherry (Amber Midthunder), is kidnapped, he turns his inability to feel pain into his strength in his fight to get her back.

We, too, want Quaid to fight for us the way Nate goes to battle for Sherry, but we’ll have to settle for seeing his gallant efforts in the movie, which was released in theaters on March 14.

Moana 2

If you just got “How Far I’ll Go” out of your head, we’re sorry to say we’ve got some new songs that’ll get lodged up in there now that Moana 2 has hit Disney+. The long-awaited sequel was released in November 2024 and landed on the streamer on March 12, filling families’ homes with “We’re Back” and “Finding the Way.”

Moana 2 sees the beloved Polynesian heroine Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) reunite with the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) and her pet pig Pua and chicken Heihei as she embarks on a journey alongside new friends to the lost island of Motufetu.

Adolescence

What would you do if your teenage son was accused of murder? That’s the question Eddie Miller (Stephen Graham) has to grapple with when his 13-year-old son is arrested for allegedly killing his schoolmate.

While the story isn’t based on true events, the creators did bear in mind the increase in crime in the U.K. — where the limited series is set — and asked themselves what societal pressures adolescent boys may be under.

“The pressures that come from all of those things are as difficult for kids here as they are the world over,” Graham told Netflix of the show, which was released on March 13.

The Electric State

The Russo Brothers, Anthony and Joe, took a break from helming Avengers movies to create a different kind of surrealistic film for Netflix: a world in which humans and robots work together (as Brown’s character puts it so eloquently in the trailer: “Nuts!”).

Starring a nearly unrecognizable Pratt and Stanley Tucci, the movie — which follows an orphaned teen who teams up with a robot to find her lost brother — hit the streaming platform on March 14.

Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna

Nearly four years after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed on the set of Rust, Hulu is looking back at what went wrong — and who was responsible for her death.

Featuring interviews with director Joel Souza, who was also hit by the same bullet, and Hutchins’ mother, Olga, the documentary pulls back the curtain on what many called an unsafe set and the aftermath of the 42-year-old’s death.

Invincible season 3 finale

The highly anticipated season 3 finale of Invincible was released on Prime Video on March 13 — and left fans immediately craving more. The superhero show is based on comics following Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), who is the son of Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), the most powerful superhero on the planet.

While in the earlier two seasons, Mark discovers that his dad isn’t as gallantly heroic as he thought he was, this season Mark has to battle with his own inner demons — and ask himself whether he, too, will take a dip into the dark side.

Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney

Netflix decided to join in on the late night fun with its first live talk show — and Mulaney is at the helm. The comedian debuted his first show on the streaming platform on March 12 with guest Joan Baez.

Up next, Mulaney has several more stars lined up — from Fred Armisen to Michael Keaton — coming to your screen from the comfort of your home every Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET.

Long Bright River

Move over Mare of Easttown and Sharp Objects, there’s a new troubled female lead investigating a case that she has a secret personal attachment to! In this Peacock limited series, Mickey (Amanda Seyfried) is a police officer looking to solve the murders of multiple women in an opioid-ridden neighborhood of Philadelphia.

But she also has ulterior motives: find her younger sister Kasey (Ashleigh Cummings) who has disappeared after years-long struggles with addiction.
