Will Poulter looks back fondly on his fan-favorite comedy We’re the Millers. But don’t hold out for a part two.

When the star, 32, caught up with PEOPLE at SXSW as he promoted his upcoming A24 movie

At the SXSW Film & TV Festival premiere of his new dark comedy Death of a Unicorn, the actor, 32, told PEOPLE there were past talks of a sequel to the 2013 film that also starred Jason Sudeikis, Emma Roberts and Jennifer Aniston.

“Like We’re Still the Millers?” Poulter says, when asked if a sequel was ever in development. “There was, I think. I don’t think it’s gonna happen. I mean, no one else is [but] I’m too old now. But, yeah, it was a fun time.”

Poulter was about 19 when he filmed We’re the Millers, which stars Sudeikis, now 49, as a drug dealer tasked with forming a fake family in order to smuggle weed. Aniston, 56, portrays a stripper who masquerades as his wife, while Roberts, 34, plays a runaway teen; she and Poulter’s character Kenny are hired to pose as the family’s kids.

“People are really nice about the movie,” Poulter says. “I’m always shocked at just how many people have seen the film. It’s really nice that people watch it and seem to enjoy it. I was certainly very lucky to be in it.”

The Hollywood Reporter reported in 2014 that New Line Cinema was moving forward with a sequel to We’re the Millers, but the movie never materialized.

Aniston said she was asked to return for a sequel in a 2023 interview for Murder Mystery 2, when asked about sequels she has been recruited for. “We’re the Millers, that didn’t happen,” she said at that time. “I don’t remember what happened, but I think there was talk of that.”

More than 10 years after We’re the Millers, Poulter is embracing another type of dark comedy with Death of A Unicorn, in which he portrays a member of a wealthy family that owns a pharmaceutical company and seeks to monetize the health benefits of a unicorn’s horn. The movie also stars Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega and Richard E. Grant, among others.

“It was the clown class, like everyone was a clown,” Poulter says of Death of a Unicorn‘s cast. “It was actually the best. No one took it seriously in the sense that— we all worked hard, right? And we all were very lucky to be there… But we all had so much fun and really leaned into the fun of it and the play. I really fell in love with the process of comedy again ‘cause I hadn’t done it in a while.”

Death of a Unicorn is in theaters March 28.
