Donny Osmond’s Grandson’s Sweet Reaction Seeing Himself on Stage

Donny Osmond is sharing his grandson’s sweet reaction to seeing his AI and CGI-generated body live in action.

On the Thursday, March 13 episode of Today, the Mulan star, 67, spoke about his Las Vegas residency show, which uses modern-day technology — and the help of his grandson Daxton — to feature a blast from the past.

“It’s literally my face, my voice and Daxton Osmond’s body,” he said, explaining that the company ZeroSpace took old interviews and voice recordings of Osmond to make his vision come to life.

“[Daxton] does musical theater, so he has stage presence,” he said of his grandson, before continuing, “In fact, he saw it for the first time — because we recorded this here in New York in January. He saw it for the first time last week, and after the show, he said, ‘Grandpa, that was incredible.’ It’s so cool that we can do that technologically now. We’re at that point.”

On Wednesday, Feb. 5, the “Go Away Little Girl” musician first shared an Instagram Reel where he revealed he’d be returning to the stage with a “co-star” — a ’70s avatar of himself.

“We are going to be making history together,” Osmond said in the clip. “Can you imagine sharing the stage with your 14-year-old self?”

The screen then cut to “a sample” of what fans might see, with Osmond sitting beside a younger, AI version of himself. He introduced himself as the “real” version, while the AI version of him claimed he was the “original” one. He proceeded to interview his younger self, saying, “What does it feel like to sing with yourself 50 years in the future?”

“Well, it’s kind of like singing with my grandpa,” the AI version of Donny remarked.

Donny then quipped that he’s actually the AI-generated version’s “grandpa,” calling the AI version his “grandson ‘Daxton.'” His costar is then revealed to be his grandson Daxton, whose face reverted to his actual identity as they snap their fingers. “The future is so fun,” said the young performer.

Osmond is famous for his incredible career as a singer and performer, but he’s also a dad to five boys: Don Jr., Jeremy, Brandon, Chris and Josh. He shares his five children with his wife of over 45 years, Debbie Osmond. Together, the pair have 14 grandchildren.

Speaking with PEOPLE about his son Chris’ 2023 appearance on Claim to Fame, Osmond raved about the joys of having a big family and watching his sons step into their roles as fathers.

“It’s such a wonderful warm feeling to see your child become a parent and to see them raise their own children and to take on the kind of family traditions that Debbie and I have started,” Osmond said about his sons. “It’s such a great dynamic to see your children grow up to be parents. They graduate into that echelon of life just finding their own feet, finding their own wings.”

In fact, Osmond says he’s created a special tradition of planting a fruit tree for every one of his grandchildren in his orchard.
