Hackers Behind the Code
I recently had the privilege of being a guest on the “Hackers Behind the Code” podcast, hosted by the talented red teamer and cybersecurity researcher, Milton Araújo of r19.io. This podcast is a go-to resource for anyone interested in offensive security, and it was a great experience to sit down with Milton for a raw and insightful conversation.
The show is all about getting to the heart of what drives the people in this field—the stories behind the keyboard, the triumphs, and the lessons learned from our failures. In our episode, we dived into topics that go beyond a technical how-to, exploring the critical, and often overlooked, aspects of a successful cybersecurity career.
Here’s a snapshot of what we discussed:
1. Leadership in Cybersecurity: We explored what it takes to be a leader in this rapidly evolving industry. It’s not just about technical skill; it’s about guiding teams, making strategic decisions under pressure, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and adaptation. We talked about how effective leadership can be the difference between a minor incident and a major breach.
2. Building Resilience in a High-Stakes Field: Cybersecurity is a field defined by constant threats and unpredictable challenges. We shared our thoughts on how professionals can build personal and professional resilience to handle the stress of the job, learn from setbacks, and stay ahead of determined adversaries.
3. Human-Centered Defense Strategies: While technology is at the core of what we do, we can’t forget the human element. We discussed the importance of designing security strategies that account for human behavior, both in terms of user education and in understanding the mindset of attackers. A defense is only as strong as its weakest link, and often, that link is a person.
4. The Role of Mentorship and Education: I believe deeply in the importance of passing on knowledge. In this episode, we highlighted how crucial mentorship is for shaping the next generation of cyber professionals. We talked about the responsibility we have to educate and inspire new talent, helping them navigate the complexities of the industry and build a strong foundation for their careers.
It was an engaging and thought-provoking conversation, and I want to thank Milton Araújo for the opportunity. If you’re passionate about cybersecurity and want to hear more about the human side of the field, I encourage you to check out the episode.
