The oddly named Bob Trevino Likes It is an indie film inspired by unlikely true events in the life of the film’s writer and director Tracie Laymon. The movie’s description and cast will no doubt intrigue many, but it’s definitely got some work to do to convince viewers of such an unlikely premise. Can Bob Trevino Likes It charm you into believing?

The Plot

The film follows a young woman named Lilly Trevino. Her life is an unfortunately relatable mess. Her love life is in shambles, her social life is essentially non-existent, and her toxic relationship with her emotionally manipulative father is constantly dragging her down. All of that begins to change when she accidentally “friends” a stranger with the same name as her dad on Facebook. What starts as a somewhat creepy parasocial relationship blossoms into a friendship that will change both of their lives.

The Acting

When I was first introduced to Bob Travino Likes It, I was initially intrigued by John Leguizamo. He is one of my favorite actors, and this felt like a character I hadn’t seen from him before. While Leguizamo was very good as Bob Trevino, with a subtle and heartfelt performance, I was blown away by the emotional depth of Barbie Ferreira as Lilly. She convincingly plays someone who has become well-practiced at hiding her emotions and trauma behind a polite and helpful facade, but when called for, she exudes desperate sadness and unbridled joy that fills the screen and your heart.

The Trauma

I’ll be honest. Bob Trevino Likes It had more of an emotional impact on me than any film in recent memory. While the film did not mirror my own life, there were moments that struck me very close to the life of someone that I care deeply about. Because of this, the journey of healing that Lilly and Bob take feels extremely powerful. I would encourage anyone who has felt family trauma, or cares for someone who has, to see this movie. The film’s message of “We’re all a bit broken, but you’re gonna be fine”, and the subtext of connection and togetherness is an incredibly important one in a time when we can all feel so alone.

The Result

Bob Trevino Likes It is billed as the unlikely story of a woman who finds a surrogate dad by accident. What it actually is, is an a-romantic love story between two broken souls who help each other heal and become better versions of themselves. This is a touching and heartfelt film that teaches the true value of a little gentle kindness. I don’t generally give ratings, but Bob Trevino Likes It is a rare 10/10 for me.
