Former MTV VJ Matt Pinfield is giving an update on his health after suffering a massive stroke in early January.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Pinfield, 63, has been released from the ICU and is currently recovering in a Los Angeles-based rehabilitation center.

The SoCal Sound radio host told the outlet that he was “unresponsive for two months” following his health emergency, which occurred the night of Jan. 6, as a result of previous health issues.

“Friends were thinking they were coming to see me for the last time. The doctors never expected me to speak or to walk again,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in an article published on Thursday, March 13. He added that he’s “recovering and am going to come back swinging.”

According to Healthline, a massive stroke occurs when “a disruption in blood flow to part of your brain causes significant damage.” Symptoms can include a sudden, severe headache, vomiting, neck stiffness and numbness or weakness on one side of the body or the face.

Pinfield shared that during his health journey, he went through pneumonia and was put on a ventilator. He said he was “close” to not making it.

While Pinfield’s girlfriend Kara Brown and his brother Glenn Pinfield previously alleged that Pinfield’s 38-year-old daughter, Jessica Pinfield, was attempting to isolate Matt from the rest of his family by filling a conservatorship, the radio host said the situation was quite different.

“She’s the one who saved my life. She protected me,” Pinfield told the outlet of Jessica, who was ultimately granted temporary guardianship of his medical and financial decisions, per The Hollywood Reporter.

The support of others also helped him push through.

“I want to say how great grateful I am for all the people that that were wishing me well. The love of the community helped me get through this,” he said.

While Pinfield said he hopes to be officially discharged by the “end of the month,” with his recovery continuing with outpatient care, he plans to take things slow.

“I’m definitely going to take some time to recover. Then I’ll do my radio shows again and get back to work doing what I love, which is to entertain people playing music,” said Pinfield.
