Dr. Anna Malaika Tubbs is analyzing the patriarchy in a new nonfiction book.
The author will publish Erased: What American Patrarchy Has Hidden From Us, a new nonfiction book, this spring. Forthcoming from Flatiron Books, Tubbs’ new book examines the history and development of the patriarchy in the United States.
In Erased, Tubbs argues that humanity in the U.S. is tied to both a “limited and flawed” gender binary, per the book’s synopsis, as well as whiteness. It also looks to elements like the country’s founding fathers, the current Supreme Court and the maternal health crisis as evidence. Through a blend of academic research, analysis and personal experience, the book offers tools to dismantle the system, like intuition, courage and power.

“I wrote this book because I want to make American patriarchy as obvious to everyone else as it is to me,” the author tells PEOPLE in an exclusive statement. “This is the first step in our fight to dismantle a system that keeps power in the hands of few at the expense of us all.”
“When we understand how American patriarchy works — how a belief in the supremacy of white men is baked into our national systems — we then transfer the energy we use being surprised by its symptoms into energy used to take it apart and uncover what lies beyond it,” Tubbs adds.
Tubbs is also the author of the 2021 nonfiction book, The Three Mothers, which highlights the stories of the mothers of Civil Rights figures Martin Luther King Jr., James Baldwin and Malcom X — Alberta King, Berdis Baldwin and Louise Little — and their impact on the nation at large.

“These women were teachers, they were passionate about their writing and putting their bodies on the line in marches and movements throughout the country for racial justice,” Tubbs told PEOPLE of the book.

“They could not have done this [important work] without their mothers … we’re missing out on a lot when we focus just on one figure,” she says. “You’re often going to find that it’s women who are left out [of the spotlight] and women of color especially.”
In Erased, the author continues a similar message of uplifting underrepresented voices.

“I want this book to serve as a guide that links our history to our present, shows other paths for our nation, gives readers a feeling of our inherent and collective power and inspires us to confront what we’re up against with a new perspective that makes the urgency of our shared fight unignorable,” Tubbs says.
Erased: What American Patriarchy Has Hidden From Us will be published on May 20 and is now available for preorder, wherever books are sold.
