To everyone new to the crypto journey, welcome! It’s a thrilling world of possibilities but it’s also one that includes new responsibilities. One of the first and most crucial things you’ll encounter is something called a seed phrase. This mouthful may not mean much to you yet, but it’s the most valuable thing you own, as far as crypto goes. If you misplace it or if someone else snatches it, you could lose access to all your funds
So let’s take it step by step, and go through exactly what a seed phrase is, why it matters, and most importantly how to store it safely in 5 easy tricks.
What Is a Seed Phrase?
When you generate a new cryptocurrency wallet (for example, using MetaMask, Trust Wallet or Ledger), the app will present your a set of 12 or 24 random words. This is your seed phrase, also known as a recovery phrase.
It’s like the master key to your wallet. What you need to note about the seed, is that if you ever lose your phone, delete the app or buy a new computer, you can simply use this phrase to retrieve your entire wallet and your crypto funds.

Here’s the key point:
If someone has your seed phrase, they have complete access to your crypto.
It’s not something you can afford to let go of o undervalue. ”You can’t just be memorizing it, and taking a screenshot is a very bad idea (we’ll get into the reason behind that shortly). What you want is a good plan for keeping it safe.
The Importance of Proper Storage!
However, unlike traditional banks, cryptocurrency wallets are self-custodial, which means you maintain control. There’s no “Forgot Password?” button for your wallet. And if you lose your seed phrase and can’t access your wallet anymore, no one not even the wallet company can help you recover it.
That’s why it’s so important to know where and how to store your seed phrase. Well, here are some beginner-friendly methods for safe-guarding your seed phrase:
✅ Life Hack #1: Just Write It Down (On Actual-Paper)
Yes, good old-fashioned pen and paper. When your wallet presents the seed phrase, note it down in pen or pencil on a fresh sheet of paper. Don’t post it on your phone, don’t store it in a notes app, definitely don’t screenshot it. Screenshots can be uploaded to cloud services such as iCloud or Google Photos, where they could be accessed by hackers.

When written, keep the paper safe and hidden away in such places as:
- A locked drawer
- A home safe
- A secure file folder
Ideally, you can store all of that information in a fireproof and waterproof safe to avoid a disaster. Then make a second copy, to keep in a separate place, just in case.
✅ Trick 2: Use a Metal Backup
Paper can rot, burn, or get wet, or fade. For a more permanent solution, a metal backup tool may be the answer. These are stainless steel plates or capsules in which you can stamp or engrave your seed phrase. Some popular brands include:

They are crafted to withstand fires, floods, corrosion even being crushed. So, essentially, similar to the durability of a car license plate, that’s the kind of thing we’re talking about; turning your seed phrase into something that doesn’t wear away.
✅ Trick 3: Bank Safe Deposit Box
For next-level security: keep the seed phrase (on paper or stored in metal) at your local bank in a safe deposit box. Banks have robust vaults, surveillance and access controls. Not practical for day to day use, a great option for storing a seed phrase long term, however.

Adding them to a safe deposit resource at the bank means that if something bad happens to your home (a fire, flood, or burglary), your crypto backup is a safe way of getting in at the bank.
✅ Trick #4: Store It Digitally (With Care)
Storing your seed phrase digitally works if done correctly but it’s the most insecure option for novices.
Here’s what NOT to do:
- Do not store it in plain text on your phone or computer
- Do not store it in Google Docs, Apple Notes, or email
- You do not want to put it in the cloud (Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox, etc.)
Here’s how to do it more safely:
- You are allowed to use encryption software to encrypt the file, such as VeraCrypt.
- But you can encrypt your data and store an encrypted file on USB flash drive or external SSD.
- Keep the device offline (and don’t connect it to devices that are online).
- Keep the USB or SSD in a safe or concealed location.
Even better? Use this digital method as a backup to your physical storage not your only copy.
✅ Trick #5: Use a Hardware Wallet (Bonus!)
A hardware wallet is a physical device (such as a USB stick) designed specifically for crypto storage. Ledger, Trezor, or Keystone are some brands that provide wallets, which help store your private keys offline, hence providing high-level security.

The first time you set up, your hardware wallet will create a seed phrase. You still need to put that seed phrase somewhere secure (see tricks above) but your private keys are never trawled on the web with a hardware wallet, so it’s virtually impossible for hackers to access your funds.
Final Beginner Tips
So, let’s finish with a few other maxims to live by:
- Do not give your seed phrase to anyone — not even the customer support of your exchange or your friend.
- Don’t keep it on your phone. Phones are lost, stolen or hacked.
- Label it carefully. If you do have multiple seed phrases, label them in some way that only you would know.
- If you want someone to retrieve your assets should something happen to you, tell a trusted person where it is.
- Test your recovery. Recover your wallet with the seed phrase (on another device) to make sure everything works.
Not Your Keys, Not Your Crypto!
In crypto, you are your own bank and your seed phrase is your vault key. The smartest thing you can do, whether you’re investing $100 or $10,000, is treat your seed phrase with maximum care.
Pick one that works for you. Or better yet employ more than one trick to ensure your backup is rock solid.
You’ve got this. Stay safe out there!
